Use the original icon for the shim exe

All the shimmed exe files in c:\ProgramData\chocolatey\bin have the shim icon

I'm using ResourceHacker to replace the shim icons with the original icons, which is OK to do. But after an update of the shimmed exe the shim icon gets restored.

Describe The Solution. Why is it needed?

Please use the original icon for the shim exe.

Shims in the chocolatey\bin folder show the original executable icon if Chocolatey CLI can extract it. If it cannot, or the executable does not have an icon, it will show the default icon at the top.

Here is a screenshot of the local chocolatey\bin folder here, showing the shim icons.

I did not know that Chocolatey CLI already tries to extract the respective icon from the orginal EXE.
In my case all shimmed executables I'm using have the shim icon. Although I was able to extract the icons from the original executables and replace them in the shimmed files using Resource Hacker.

To clarify, Chocolatey CLI does not extract the icons, Shimgen does.

Can you provide the packages that Shimgen fails to extract the icons?

From your list, exiftool and PureText work as expected. The others do not.
